Posted 24 July - PM. This has happened to me for the last few months now. Nothing is coming up on the various virus scans I've been doing and it's extremely frustrating. I have seen this exact issue before. I would log into this machine as a different user, and see if the issue persists.
If the issue does not persist, then I would say it's related to the user profile. I did try deleting the iconcache. I second that- see if the issue is user specific or system wide happens in more than 1 user on the same computer. If it's user-specific, you might have to recreate the profile. If it's system wide, might have to repair Windows. I have also run into this before, after a user downloaded an app from CNET, and the only resolution was to recreate the user profile The only thing that we could figure is that something became corrupted in the user profile during the file download, and we were never able to determine exactly what that was.
Im' happy.. Saw that my Avira Ant-vir anti-virus pgrm was stating that it was out of date.. I"m like WTF?? Hard boot.. Windows needs activation.. I was like.. I call the get a live person on the other end.. I get my new activation.. I get to the prod key install.. In reply to komodo47's post on January 23, Komodo, I think as far as I am sure of it haven't got the full answer yet but I did another repair on the computer this time without the sound car or network plugged in.
On this time I got no reboot at "installing devices although it did ask for the drivers for yeh VGA adapter. Thought nothing of it and clicked cancel and continued. I will have to try and find the motherboard model and find the drivers for an install while doing repair.
I have also tried to create a new user in safe mode before the activation errors Bit with no luck I get stick at the same point. No desktop. No icons. Well bizzarre. Computer problem? Tech Support Guy is completely free -- paid for by advertisers and donations.

You are unable to do anything because the whole screen disapears and when it returns the task you attempted to start has stopped.
I have tried in Safe mode as well. Using windows XP restore wont work either.
