I have the same problem. I have a FoodSaver V and the arm will not come down far enough to meet the sealing strip that activates the sealing mechanism.
My unit V was not sealing. My unit is pretty old, but when you need it, you need it! I cleaned it and did all that it ask, still no seal. I then took the foam sealing rings out and soaked them in water, just a few seconds, dried them and then put them back in. That did the trick. Works as good a new. Thank you for your post. I would say that wiping with a damp cloth was not enough. Completely cover the seal with water, like washing clothes, then take out and dry with a towel and put it back in.

After troubleshooting, I found that the internal fuse was blown.
I unsoldered the blown fuse and replaced it with a similar 3A V fuse. Immediately blown when the unit was plugged in. Any suggestion on where I should go next? It does not work and a gentleman took the back off and tried fixing it but he now needs a diagram of where all the hoses connect to that is under the mother board.
