Effective uid is not root please try installing virtualbox

I'll probably self answer some other of the options - but this is the superior and correct answer. This might work -- but it is a good idea? Usually setting the setuid bit randomly on binaries that weren't designed to be setuid is not a good idea -- for one thing, it can open up security holes. I would prefer to see some justification of why this answer is safe and reasonable. Unfortunately, the original source provides no such information.

Well said. Virtual box is probably neither. It pokes holes everywhere you might want to compromise security. Kind of like many AV products. Helped me on Manjaro Linux — Anwar. The Overflow Blog. On Windows, there is a checkbox in the right-click Properties for a program that allows always running that program As Administrator.

Perhaps there's something similar for Mac? Try web-searching how to run a program with 'sudo' every time. Like with Run As Administrator, 'sudo' probably gives more privileges to a program than regular running, which allows more malware attack vectors, especially through a program like Virtualbox.

Problem persists. Thank you! I suspected it was just a matter of giving permissions to something, I just didn't know what. I can reproduce the problem on that release of macOS but not on earlier versions. Cannot reproduce. Which VirtulBox package did you install on your Fedora 22 system exact package name please? I'm running 4. However, if I try to run "strace VirtualBox " then I get that error. I don't know if this helps with the original problem, or is actually a completely separate issue.

Getting this error if VirtualBox is started with strace is completely normal.
