MenV was referred to in the press as Marionette for many years, though that name was only used derisively inside the studio. But there is a possibility that Pixar artists still call Presto MenV because this is the name they used for most of their careers when working for Pixar. Unlike RenderMan, there has never been the thought of releasing it as a product. As a result, little is known outside Pixar about the detailed workings of this software.
Pixar claims that Presto is designed to be intuitive and familiar to animators who have traditional cel animation experience. Pixar chooses to use a proprietary system instead of the commercial products available and used by other companies due to another very important reason which is the fact that they can edit the software code to meet their needs. One example of this editing is shown in extra features of The Incredibles DVD; it is explained that previous versions of Marionette aka Menv were not able to stretch models in the ways needed to correctly animate Elastigirl so the in-house Marionette development team created a new version that included this feature.
One of the most impressive things about Presto is that it allows artists to work interactively in scene context in real-time with full-resolution geometric models that combined can reach tens of millions of polygons in addition to sophisticated rig controls, and has significantly increased the productivity of character animators at Pixar.
Presto was not a perfect software for Pixar in the early stages because it had some limitations including its inability to handle collaborative work, so Pixar decided to bring the functionality into its workflow. USD is a framework for the interchange of 3D computer graphics data. These days, there are real time environments in packages like Unreal Engine and even Blender is getting closer to it. What is remarkable nonetheless is that Pixar had this technology back in That just shows how much ahead of their time they were and perhaps still are.
In regards to the actual animation process itself what I find very interesting is that there seem to be no actual curve controls to select the body parts. All it takes is a click on the geometry which is a fantastic solution to having to turn curves on and off and gives a much clearer view of the character one is working with. We can see how Bobby Podesta is using each channel on the right for one rotation axis of the head. At Weta Digital we had a similar system for the face rigs on films like Planet of the Apes.
When watching the behind the scenes footage below, I also noticed another thing. This suggests to me that the 2D capabilities of Presto seem to be more extensive than perhaps has shown in public.
It has the most advanced animation toolset and is widely available. Blender is catching up quickly but it is not there yet. I have also written an article about actual Pixar software that IS available to the public. RenderMan is free for all non-commercial purposes , including evaluations, education, research, and personal projects. Toon Boom software The best animation studios in the world use Toon Boom software. From major animation companies to small studios, our customers use our animation software to produce movies, TV shows, games, explainer videos and advertisements.
Pixar has integrated Houdini on top of their proprietary tools and has recently increased its deployment of Houdini by acquiring a site license of Houdini Batch to support future projects. When using this different software, the company can get access to different types of features, which will ensure that the video quality is at best?
It is because the animation industry is focusing more on the 3D animated movies to ensure that it looks amazing. That is why you will surely find the animated companies to focus on 3D animation settings and software. It is the reason why you can find plenty of options that can help with the 3D animations. In this photorealistic 3D rendering tool, you can see that the Pixar produces it.
There have been many improvements in the software, and back in , it was made open source for non-commercial use. You can also find what animation software does pixar use.
Any fan of animation who wants to try their hands can easily get access to it.
