The committee values applicants' research experiences, whether in basic science, social science or liberal arts. Research in biomedical sciences is encouraged. The practice of medicine requires the highest level of personal integrity. The committee seeks applicants whose characters are developing in a way conducive to the best practice of medicine.
This will include emotional maturity, personal depth, commitment to others' well-being, and ethical and moral integrity. Each year the committee members interview applicants for the M. As we receive approximately 7, applications, only a small portion of applicants will be selected for interviews. We select applicants for interviews according to the extent to which we feel they fulfill our criteria.
We interview for the M. If you are offered an interview, we will notify you by email. The message will indicate available dates and times. If you are able to attend those dates and times, please confirm as soon as possible.
If you are unable to attend, we are happy to arrange alternative times. On the day of the interview, please plan to stay for all scheduled activities, which occupy most of the day. The day's activities will include:. WCMC requires two semesters or their equivalent, in biology, chemistry and physics. These will typically be comprehensive introductory courses with laboratory work. In biology, coursework will typically include molecular biology, cell biology and genetics.
We recommend two semesters of organic chemistry, with lab, but we accept one semester of organic chemistry, with lab, and one semester of other advanced biology or chemistry coursework. Examples include biochemistry, physical chemistry, analytic chemistry, and molecular genetics.
WCMC requires two semesters of writing-intensive courses: one in the humanities or social sciences e. Integrated science courses, that include biology, chemistry, physics and mathematical aspects of life sciences, may be substituted for coursework in the three basic science areas on a credit-hour-by-credit-hour basis.
WCMC strongly encourages applicants to study a broad range of disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences, beyond the minimal requirements for admission.
Of particular value in the modern practice of medicine are statistics, ethics, psychology, anthropology, sociology and management skills.
WCMC strongly encourages applicants to undertake study at an advanced, in-depth level in at least one discipline beyond the minimal requirements for admission and the course requirements for their major.
To fulfill an admissions requirement, courses must have been satisfactorily completed within 10 years of application. We recommend that one or more advanced science course s be completed within five years of application. I look forward to your application. Our department is committed to providing the highest quality medical care to our patients and an excellent education to our trainees.
Our Physician Assistant Emergency Medicine Residency will prepare residents to become highly competent clinicians by developing their skills in all core aspects of emergency care.
The residency encompasses approximately 3, clinical hours of patient contact over 12 months, starting each year in November. Clinical rotations take place in the adult and pediatric emergency departments as well as various medical and surgical specialties. The rotation schedule is designed to provide the Physician Assistant a solid foundation in the clinical skills, knowledge, and procedures relevant to emergency medicine.
Graduates of this program are known for their leadership abilities as well as for providing the highest level of clinical care that will always belong to our robust alumni base. During rotations in the ED, the Physician Assistant resident will evaluate and treat patients under the direct supervision of attending physicians as well as veteran Advanced Practice Providers APPs. This close relationship provides an outstanding forum to learn from the impressive diversity and complexity of medical conditions presenting to the ED.
Physician Assistant residents also work alongside physician residents and Nurse Practitioner residents in the Emergency Department in a collegiate environment. During rotations away from the ED, Physician Assistant residents work under the supervision of both physicians and other advanced practice providers.
The faculty at WCM Emergency Medicine is renowned for their accomplishments in education and research. Areas of special interest and expertise include global emergency medicine, toxicology, geriatric emergency medicine, wilderness and environmental medicine, emergency department administration, clinical and basic science research, and medical education and simulation.
The Physician Assistant is invited to explore such areas based on personal interest. The Physician Assistant residency in Emergency Medicine currently accepts 4 candidates each year through a competitive application process. We will incorporate didactic learning and hands-on skills as well as utilize our Simulation center. Our residents will participate in a separate Airway course, Ultrasound course, and the National Conference our department hosts annually.
The current rotation calendar for the Physician Assistant Residency in Emergency Medicine is described below. The calendar encompasses approximately 3, clinical hours over 12 months, starting each November.
We do recommend that non-science majors take at least two terms of a basic science beyond the introductory level.
An undergraduate degree is not a prerequisite for acceptance or matriculation. However, most applicants will have completed, or be completing, a bachelor's or higher degree before they begin the application process. If I haven't completed my prerequisites, can I still apply? Yes, but all prerequisites must be completed by January 31 of the year for which admission is sought. We accept AP credits for physics only. Requirements for other courses must be met by taking advanced science coursework.
All prerequisite courses must have been completed within 10 years of application, and we prefer that prerequisite courses in biology be taken within five years of application.
