Wayne state university biochemistry graduate program

Students should strive to be 1st or 2nd author on one peer reviewed publication to validate the quality of their research and to compete effectively in their post-graduate careers. Regular interactions between students and faculty are facilitated with weekly departmental and student seminars, formal collaborations between research groups and a cooperative work environment that promotes discussion of research projects between students of different labs.

More detailed information can be found in the BMB M. Students are urged to gather as much background information as possible before making these choices as they are likely to be a major factor in determining the direction of their entire professional career. Generally, each student does three rotations during the fall and winter semesters, and on the basis of this experience, chooses the laboratory in which they will carry out their doctoral research. After the first year in the program, students choose courses from anywhere in the University, to focus on their particular interests.

Six credit hours in an appropriate minor are required, which need not be confined to coursework offered in the School of Medicine. Favorite choices for the minor include courses in computer science or chemistry. For departments in which the GRE is required for admission to a master's program, it is expected that this exam will be taken at the normal time i. Once a department accepts a student into AGRADE, the student and the graduate director will complete an AGRADE plan of work that designates which graduate courses will be taken during the student's undergraduate program.

An AGRADE plan of work is a master's plan of work which designates the type of master's degree being chosen Plan A, B, or C and the courses that the student will complete during their master's program both during AGRADE as an undergraduate and as a master's student upon graduation from their undergraduate program. If any approved courses are at the or levels, the student may have to obtain a registration override from the department. If a student enrolls in upper-division courses in which both undergraduate and graduate students participate, AGRADE students will be held to the course standards required of the graduate students.

AGRADE students will receive their bachelor's degree at the normal time after they have completed all undergraduate requirements and have applied for graduation. Students should work with the undergraduate advisor in their major department to ensure completion of the undergraduate degree. Once students graduate from their Bachelor's program, they will pay graduate level tuition for the remainder of their master's degree programs.

Because grades of "B-", "C" and "D" are treated differently at the graduate and undergraduate levels, only those AGRADE-approved courses in which the student subsequently earns a "B" or higher will transfer to the graduate transcript. Biochemistry and Chemical Biology Honors B.
